This talk will focus on the ways that Southern novelists at the beginning of the 20th century re-imagined Abraham Lincoln as a lifelong believer in white supremacy and a man who, had he lived, would have proven to be a great friend to the defeated South.

This Friday, Nov 4 in the Egan Lecture Hall, Dr. David Noon will present "The Southerner: Abraham Lincoln as a White Supremacist Hero" as part of the fall Evening at Egan lecture series. This talk by UAS Social Sciences Department Chair David Noon will focus on the ways that Southern novelists at the beginning of the 20th century re-imagined Abraham Lincoln as a lifelong believer in white supremacy and a man who, had he lived, would have proven to be a great friend to the defeated South.

By looking at this somewhat unorthodox interpretation of Lincoln, we can begin to think about the flexibility of historical memory and ponder the ways that Americans have used Lincoln, perhaps more so than any other historical figure, to support their own values and beliefs. We are reminded that questions about Lincoln and social justice continue to matter in our own historical moment, as do questions about the causes and consequences of the Civil War.
