The fourth annual Sound and Motion Spring Arts Series starts Friday, January 18. This line-up is the most exciting yet, featuring partnerships with community organizations including the Juneau Symphony, Alaska State Film Library, Woosh Kinaadeiyí Poetry Slam and the Goldtown Theater. For the first time, some events will be held at the UAS REC center, one of Juneau’s best kept secrets as a great facility for arts events. Student government is sponsoring the visit of one of the best singer-songwriters in the country. San Francisco’s John Elliott will do a concert Friday, Feb. 1 at the REC and will also be on hand that weekend for workshops with students. On Feb.22 Alaska Constitutional Convention delegate and author Vic Fischer will present on the autobiography of his fascinating life, from Russia to Alaska. Alaskapella will round out the season with a rousing concert in the Egan Lecture Hall on April 26.

Juneau Symphony Music Director Kyle Pickett and JSO Resident Artist Roald Simonson
Pickett and Simonson will talk about the process and pitfalls of putting together orchestral performances accompanying film. They will also show clips of past collaborations, including the JSO and North State Symphony Our Town Project, and the Juneau Symphony's upcoming Tenderland film project.Feb. 1, 7 p.m., UAS REC Center

Woosh Kinaadeiyí Poetry Slam: Sweet and Sour
Kate Laster, UAS student and Jacqueline Boucher, UAS alumni, hosts
In the fourth slam of Woosh Kinaadeiyí's third season, Juneau's spoken word artists come together to do battle in the friendliest competition in town. Performers of all types are encouraged to take part in the non-competitive open mic portion of the evening, while original poetry is welcome in the slam. Sign-ups begin at 6:30 pm, and the show begins at 7:00 p.m.

Victor Fischer, Author, “To Russia with Love: An Alaskan’s Journey” with Charles Wohlforth; University of Alaska Press
An autobiography that traces the author’s experiences in World War II, his role as a delegate to the Alaska Constitutional Convention and other government appointments, and continuing relationship with Russia. Victor Fischer held several government positions and was on the faculty at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and Anchorage, where he was director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research. “Here is an epic memoir that reads like a best-selling thriller. Tidal Echoes Launch
Tidal Echoes is a literary and art journal that showcases the art and writing of Southeast Alaskans, published by UAS. The 2013 featured author is Richard Dauenhauer and featured artist is UAS Art faculty Jeremy Kane. "Tidal Echoes is proof that many of Alaska’s finest writers and artists are living in and inspired by Southeast Alaska in all its natural and human glory, and that UAS is the heart of a modern Alaskan creative renaissance.” -- Heather Lende
