University to Interview Alaska College of Education Dean Candidates
The UA Board of Regents and President Jim Johnsen are seeking increased alignment and coordination of teacher education and educational leadership programs across the UA system, with the UAS Alaska College of Education providing administrative leadership statewide.

University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) Chancellor Rick Caulfield announced the names of two finalists for the position of Executive Dean for the Alaska College of Education based at UAS in Juneau. The two candidates are Dr. Steve Atwater, currently Interim Dean of the UAF School of Education in Fairbanks, and Dr. Kathryn Hildebrand, currently Professor, Department of Teacher Education, Troy University College of Education in Alabama.
“We’re very fortunate to have two experienced and highly-regarded educational leaders applying for this new position,” Caulfield said. “We need a leader who can work effectively with faculty, staff, and educational partners to grow the number of quality Alaskan-educated teachers in our state. I invite members of the university community and education partners to visit with the candidates and provide feedback to the search committee.”

In the next two weeks, the two candidates will have an opportunity to visit all three UA universities in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks. Dr. Atwater’s events extend from February 19-21, while Dr. Hildebrand’s events are from March 7-9.
Each candidate will be interviewed by the search committee, meet with Education faculty and staff, participate in an Open Forum for members of the public, and provide a formal presentation that will be recorded and broadcast on UATV statewide.
The position of Executive Dean involves providing direct leadership and oversight for UAS Education programs as well as coordination of teacher education programs at all three universities. Education programs, faculty, and staff will remain at all three universities, but will be guided by a statewide UA Teacher Education Council comprised of faculty and university leaders and chaired by the Executive Dean.
