Dr. Mary Wegner to lead Educational Leadership Programs for UAS Alaska College of Education

She will be responsible for the program that leads to a Master of Education degree, including satisfying the requirements for a Type B Certificate necessary to be a school principal, as well as the superintendent endorsement.

Dr. Mary Wegner has been hired to lead the Alaska College of Education’s (AKCOE) two educational leadership programs. She will be responsible for the program that leads to a Master of Education degree, including satisfying the requirements for a Type B Certificate necessary to be a school principal, as well as the superintendent endorsement. Wegner is currently the superintendent of the Sitka School District. Dr. Wegner joins the UAS faculty beginning in July.

A longtime leader for distance learning, she will be based in Juneau at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) and have student supervision duties throughout Alaska. Dr. Wegner earned a Ph.D. in Educational Technology Leadership from Pepperdine University in 2015. At UAS she earned her Master of Education degree in Educational Technology in 1995. She also holds a Superintendent Endorsement in Educational Leadership from UAS, and an Administration Endorsement in Educational Leadership from UAA.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Wegner will join the Alaska College of Education as a faculty member to lead our two educational leadership programs,” remarked Dr. Steve Atwater, Executive Dean, “Her extensive experience as an educator and as a leader well positions her to lead the two programs that prepare school leaders for Alaska.”

The Alaska College of Education at UAS provides programs designed to meet the needs of those with a calling to become teachers, and those who are already in the profession. This includes those who seek to take leadership roles as principals and superintendents.
