Dr. Verena Roberts Donates to the Cyril George Collection at the UAS Egan Library

After an amazing presentation Open Educational Resources (OER) and equity to faculty and staff of the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), Dr. Verena Roberts of the University of Calgary presented books to contribute to the Cyril George collection housed in the UAS Egan Library on the Auke Lake campus in Juneau.

After an amazing presentation Open Educational Resources (OER) and equity to faculty and staff of the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), Dr. Verena Roberts of the University of Calgary presented books to contribute to the Cyril George collection housed in the UAS Egan Library on the Auke Lake campus in Juneau.

Dr. Roberts is a passionate online and blended K-12 educator and instructional designer who recently completed her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Learning Sciences with a focus on K-12 Open Educational Practices with the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary. She is currently a sessional instructor and research assistant with the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary, Canada.

In her presentation Dr. Roberts described how open educational practices can strengthen sustainable connections between universities, rural communities, and cultural learning contexts. She demonstrated how university programs can benefit from learning from and with multiple learning contexts. The workshop emphasized how student-centered learning and open educational practices can expand learning opportunities for all learners, especially those from rural and culturally diverse communities who may have previously felt confused when designing their learning pathway in university contexts.

Roberts’ contribution will be added to a special collection named after Ḵaalḵáawu Cyril George, a Tlingit leader from the Deisheetaan Clan of Angoon, and partially funded by a Rasmuson Foundation grant. Established in 2016, the Cyril George Collection honors indigenous voices and Alaska Native Knowledge in a collection of over 3,000 volumes on the main floor of Egan Library. The collection includes sub-collections for Alaska Native Arts, Alaska Native Language, and Alaska Native Society. A Global Indigenous Knowledge collection has materials with more of a focus on indigenous people of North America and the world, as well as more general language materials, and literature.
