The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jackie Wilson as its new Dean of Students. She began working for UAS on June 29. As Dean of Students. Ms. Wilson oversees the departments of Campus Life, including Residence Life, the Recreation Center, Counseling, the Health Clinic, Student Activities, the Native & Rural Student Center and more.

“I'm looking forward to meeting students and shaping an exciting and inclusive experience,” she noted, “These challenging times create opportunities for the campus to come together in a spirit of care and kindness. We are a dynamic community. We can do it!”

Wilson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Earlham College and her Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration and Policy Analysis from Stanford University. She comes to UAS from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she served as Associate Dean of Students for Health and Well-Being. She has held leadership positions at multiple institutions across the country including Earlham College and Valparaiso University in Indiana, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Jackie spent nearly a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area and remarked, “The overcast weather here will not faze me! With respect to learning about the unique elements of life in Alaska, that is going to be both exciting and humbling.” One of her grounding interests is improvisational comedy, which is all about keeping the conversation going, she says. “You'll find me fun and easy to talk to. Theater is also serious, of course, bringing awareness in a creative performance space to issues that might be difficult for society to face head on. Having necessary resources for mental health is one of those issues right now.” Jackie comes to UAS with experience creating opportunities for improved mental health services.

Jackie and her husband Dr. Stephen Wilson are looking forward to a full immersion experience by living on campus. As a scholar of religious ethics, Steve will be continuing several academic research projects as well as looking for opportunities for getting involved in Juneau civic life. Jackie remarked, “We look forward to sharing our passions for cooking, community-building, and of course, the stories, art, and wildlife of Alaska. We bring with us two new (indoor) members of the latter. Our feline friends, Willa and Zelda, will smile down on you from the window perches in the campus apartments.”

“Creating a vibrant undergraduate on-campus experience is a priority in our strategic enrollment planning at UAS, and Jackie is the right person to lead our efforts in this area, said Lori Klein, Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
