Freshmen Students: before meeting with your advisor, you'll need to place into math and writing classes. Adequately preparing can save you significant time and money - your placement scores determine which classes you can start in.
Math Placement
You can take the math placement exam online at any time.
Writing Placement
You can place into writing classes based on your ACT or SAT scores.
ACT English + Reading Total Combined Score | SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing | UAS Writing Class |
---|---|---|
26-29 | 390-420 | WRTG 090 |
30-35 | 430-470 | WRTG 110 |
36-59 | 480-700 | WRTG 111 |
60-72 | 710-800 | WRTG 211 or WRTG S212 |
If you did not take the ACT or SAT, you can follow the Self Directed Placement tool to get a good idea of which class is appropriate to start in. We recommend using this tool and talking with your advisor for an honest discussion of your writing skills and abilities. You can then register for one of the following writing classes:
- Writing 090 - Writing and Reading Strategies: Develop college writing and reading strategies. Review sentence and paragraph structure as part of the development of essays. Emphasizes revision techniques for essays and critical reading in academic contexts.
- Writing 110 - Introduction to College Writing: Emphasize composition of essays for academic writing. Includes critical reading, analysis, and integration of sources to enhance students' writing. Practice in revising and editing to improve clarity, coherence, and purpose.
- Writing 111 - Writing Across Contexts: An introduction to writing strategies and processes for reading and responding to rhetorical situations across a variety of public and academic contexts.
Transfer or Returning Students: if you already passed college level math or English classes, you do not need to take a placement exam.
Incoming students must meet with an academic advisor before signing up for classes. Your advisor can help you identify college and career goals, choose a degree program, select classes, build a schedule, and navigate the university system. We recommend you set up an appointment and meet with your advisor before registration opens each semester to make informed decisions when choosing your classes.
Use the Find My Advisor Tool to look up your advisor's name and contact information. If you haven’t picked a major yet, contact the Student Resource Center at 907-796-6000 to make an advising appointment. Appointments are available in-person or over the phone.
After you've met with your advisor, you can sign up for classes with a Course Registration Form, or online via UAOnline.
Once you are logged in, click the Student Services and Account Information link, then select Registration.
The Financial Aid Office is here to help make sure you maximize the opportunities and resources that are available to you when it comes to funding your education. Financial Aid and Scholarship Checklist
FAFSA
Your first step is to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required to apply for all federal, state, and need-based institutional aid. List the UAS school code 001065 on the FAFSA, and UAS will automatically receive an electronic copy. UAS requires access to a current, valid FAFSA in order to process any of your financial aid.
Note: Alaska residents should complete the FAFSA by June 30 in order to maintain eligibility for the Alaska Performance Scholarship and the Alaska Education Grant.
GI Bill®: Request to Begin VA Benefits form. Filling out the FAFSA could secure extra funds in addition to the GI Bill®.
Juneau Campus Housing
Freshman housing is located in the heart of campus; apartments for transfer students, those over 21, or families are a short walk away. A free shuttle service runs between housing, main campus, the recreation center and the ocean-side science building.
Space is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
All new incoming students are required to attend orientation. UAS offers events for both on-campus and online students. Parents, guardians, family, and friends are welcome to attend as guests to select orientation events before the fall semester.
Orientation helps prepare you for a successful transition into college life and is a great way to make connections and relieve common anxieties about starting college. New students who attend orientation tend to:
- Transition more successfully into college life
- Enjoy greater satisfaction throughout the college experience
- Display higher levels of academic achievement
- Graduate from degree programs at a higher rate
To sign up, visit the Orientation site and select the campus you will be attending. If you have questions about which event is right for you, don’t hesitate to contact us!

UAS is committed to providing an academic environment where everyone can live, study, work and have fun safely. Title IX Training: Sex and Gender Based Discrimination module is an online educational training tool that provides information about sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and sexual harassment. All UAS students, staff, and faculty are required to complete this training module each year.
- Log in to UAOnline and under the Student Services and Account Information tab, select Student Training.
- Select Title IX Training: Sex and Gender Based Discrimination.
You can start and stop the training as necessary. In total, the training takes roughly 1-2 hours to complete. You must complete this training by a specified date to avoid a hold on your account, which would delay you from registering for classes for the next semester. You will receive reminders about the training and the deadline will be advertised around campus. You should not, however, finish the training before July 1, otherwise it will not count toward the following academic year.
